The Old Prison Living History Project
Picture

The Old Prison in Northleach is a former House of Correction, built late in the 18th century and has had numerous roles over the last 230 years. Today it is owned by the charity, Friends of the Cotswolds, and is run as a heritage site, café and events space.

Over the last 12 months, the charity has been working with 6 volunteers, running a ‘Living History’ project, recording the memories of 10 local residents and former staff of the prison as they recall life when it was a police station and a petty session’s court, as well as exploring the Cotswolds’ agricultural history. We heard about how local children played in the old prison in the 1930s, the building’s role in the war, what life was like living in the police station in the 1960s, the role of a local bobby, how it felt being up in court and the background of the collection of agricultural implements illustrating the changing face of farming.

We would like to specifically thank those who shared their stories with us: Enid Sly, Jack Cratchley, Dave Thompson, John Mustoe, Audrey Trotman, Ian Slatter, Malcolm Rhodes, Jacques Astic, Eddie Quarterman and Mike McClarron.
